DR Fat Beams

Recommend DR Pure Blues, my new go-to nickel round. Lovely round tone with some bite and nothing that annoys me.

I second Pure Blues.

I do love Dunlop Superbrights. But I had way too many occurences of the same quality issues. I switched to Pure Blues for my most recent restring and I am very happy. They have a nice boldness to them, throughout the tone range. Big lows, cool high mid grind. Great rock string. But they also warm up REAL nice, when they age. They also have fantastic note definition and balance, from string to string. I got the pack with the .130 B and it is the best B string I have ever used. Positive feel, clear notes. Good punch.

Yeah, they're just too bright for me I think. I've gotta get back to the nickel plated strings

I've tried Fat Beams once and felt the same way. Stiff.
Went to hi-beams and have been happy. Feel and sound great for a long time.
Even when they're worn out they still sound great.

Yeah I was using hi beams right before I tried these fat beams and I liked them way more than the fat beams

Having used both I thought the mid-heaviness of the Fatbeams translated better to a live mix than the Hi Beams, which for my purposes kind of got lost. I honestly don't feel that much of a difference tension-wise between the two but I also have a heavy attack so I like some resistance from my strings.

I've been using Fat Beams as long as I can remember. I've tried others, both within the DR family and competitive brands. I always go back to the Fat Beams 45's though.

As is everything when it comes to playing music, individual tastes & preferences are mostly subjective, there is no "best" or "correct", it's down to the individual player and that all.

That being said, to ME, the Fat Beams have everything I'm wanting in a string: Tone, tension & play-ability.

One thing I have noticed, when playing my Musicman Stingray 4 single, when I put a set of D'addario's on it last month I instantly noticed the phantom G syndrome kick in, all upper register vanished in the mix. Threw on a fresh set of Fat Beams, it all came back. OK, so maybe its also up to your ears too, I didn't like anything about the D'addario's and that forced me to go back to what I like.

Again, it's totally subjective, I'm certain many on here feel the exact opposite & prefer D'addario over DR

Back to Fats on my five-string Yamaha. I was using the Marcus Miller Dunlop Super Brights, which is still a great string (and on the Ricky), but the Fats sing better on this bass. Looking forward to rehearsal on Friday.

I'm planning on putting a set of DR Fat Beams on my Retrovibe Zygote this fall. Everything demo I've heard of the fat beams I've liked, so I'm pretty excited.

I go back and forth between Fat and Hi beams... I think they are both outstanding. But for the P bass I like the Sun Beams. Even when played awhile they still sound great on that bass.

I have a JB-2 with an ash body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard.

I’m currently using DR hi beams, but have used fat beams and sun beams also.

I still haven’t found a set of strings that brings out the tone of the instrument at least to my preferences.

Maybe try the Dunlop's supper brites. But Maybe more brightness isn't what you are after cause Im am not saying dunlops are brighter than DR.. You know I have never really played any of my basses with the standard D'Addario rounds and did not like the sound.. Why don't you try from there and see where you want to go. Maybe Nichols are a better match.

Sheltjo6, if you're looking for more mid-grind, I'd recommend the Marcus Miller Dunlop Super Brights. These strings hang with this kind of DR crowd with more aggression in the mids.
