DR Fat Beams

I recently strung up my g&l jb2 with a set of DR Fat Beams (45-105). I was using High Beams for a while before that and wanted to try something new. So far I really don't like these strings. The tension is greater and I don't love the feel of them on my fingers. They seem pretty stiff. Although they do sound thick and funky when you really dig in.

I think I want to get back to nickel plated strings because I like the feel on my fingers more. Can anybody give me a recommendation on some strings to try out on my jb2? I play mostly finger style. I used to use Dunlop strings all the time in college. Are they still good strings?

Recommend DR Pure Blues, my new go-to nickel round. Lovely round tone with some bite and nothing that annoys me.

I was gonna suggest a set of those low beams myself - I think you mean PURE blues. I don't think DR marketing guys could come up with names that are harder to screw up. I like fatbeams, but I get the set with the 80 A instead of the 85. the tension is more even......

I’m messing with a 2500.

All the strings above are the usual suspects. I’m High Beams currently. I like the SS Dunlop’s too.

Let’s see if there are any other choices out there.

Pure Blues are not nickel plated. They're a nickel alloy.

DR uses the fancy marketing term "Quantum Nickel" for that. It's one of those "secret recipes".

The Sunbeams would be the NPS version closest to the Pure Blues. Based on my limited experience with them, the PBs seem to be warmer of the two right out of the package.

If that's the case, the Pure Blues may not work for you. If anything, the Pure Blues have even less zing than the Sunbeams.

Yea, they have a grabby feel to them but they do sound good.

I've tried a lot of strings over the past few years and I'm fairly settled on DR Pure Blues. Don't care what they're made out of. They sound great. They do mellow out a bit but then those delicious mids come through and it's hard to explain but I find them to be very responsive and easy to move around on. very comfortable and the tension is just right for me.

That's correct.

Fat Beams are the slow-wound version of Hi Beams, and Pure Blues are the nickel alloy version of Sunbeams.

Fatbeams are one of my all time favorite strings. They have some serious mojo going on straight out of the package. I like them better than Hi Beams which never really did it for me.

The stainless low riders have some good zing, in my opinion. I'm actually going to give the pure blues a try for a little warmer/ softer tone.

I like the fat beams. Just go for the light gauge, but if you dislike tension don't go for lo riders. They're higher tension though notably less than other hex cores.
