DR Legend Flatwound

I am about to re-string my P bass with DR flatwounds. Anybody thumping DR's?
I just installed them and they are really nice. They have a high quality feel.

I have them on three of my basses. They are my favorite flatwound string.

I have a couple of sets in reserve so that if/when I need to change strings on any of my other four basses with flats that I can go to Legends on them.

They sound cool in demos, but that 45-105 thing is a dealbreaker for me. Why don't more manufacturers make flats in wuss gauges?

It put me off too for a long time. I finally caved and strung some up about 6 months ago because of all the raves about how smooth they felt. They are incredibly smooth. Unbelievably so. They’re also stiff thanks to the tight winds and heavy gauge. I have not played strings this stiff in YEARS.

You know what? I left them on. Turns out, I adapted very well. The smoothness got me. They also turned out to have a smooth, but powerful tone (they did not in the beginning). The feel is also balanced spot on from string to string. Kinda left field move for me, but I set the action very low and went for it, and I’m glad I did.

I can dig that. Not a fan of stiffness but I do have a set of Dunlop flats on one of my basses that are 45-105. I tried them because someone told me they're looser than most, and they are and they feel really good. But I'm glad they finally started making them in wuss gauges this year because I like them a lot better :D But it's all about whatever makes you happy, and if the Legends are getting it done for you, that's all that matters. They do sound good in demos for sure.

Dunlop flats are on my “to try” list.
I love 'em. They'll fool you at first, though. They sound like rounds fresh out of the box but they deaden up really quick and get very thumpy. Plus they're extremely smooth, too, which you will find cool since it sounds like you get that from the DR's as well (if I'm not mistaken, Dunlop has a former DR string designer heading up their strings R&D). I'd like to try every flat on the market too, but I'm done...Fenders get Dunlops, violin basses get LaBellas, and jury's out on the Dano. Just got a set of Dunlop shorties I'm trying out but I really like the LaBellas on it. Unfortunately, I broke the E string key and I'm waiting for a new one, so that battle will have to be fought at a later date. Lesson learned...don't wind long scale E strings on those cheapo Kluson knockoff guitar keys that Danos come with :D

not sure this thread is quite old enough to qualify as a zombie but...

i've put a set of short scale DR legends on my vintera mustang and the E string is SUPER dead. sounds like a totally different set of strings than the A D and G. i use sunbeams for rounds, so i'm well versed at properly installing round-core strings, i don't think i fouled up the string putting it on. is this just what I should expect with these strings (or flats in general)?

Haven't used the short scales but the set I have on my P was pretty balanced out of the gate. Legends do have one of the shortest/quickest decays that I've come across after testing around 15 different sets of flats. I'd hit DR up. Good customer service and ask them. Before that uninstall and reinstall just to make sure nothing is twisted. Sometimes just relieving the tension for a few hours and then bringing it back up to pitch works as well. But it wouldn't be unheard of for you to have a dud in which case DR should replace it.
