After 20 years of using D 'Addario nickels I have a hankering to try some DRs. I play classic rock 95% finger style so I don't need overly bright- punch is what I go for. My local guitar store has both sunbeams and pure blues on the shelf. Which would you recommend if one was looking for punch vs just clangy highs?

DR sunbeam vs pure blues

For rock and punch I would try Nickel Lo Riders.
Sunbeams for warmth and sparkle. Pure Blues for extra bite in the mid.
As already mentioned above, I would consider the Nickel Lo-Riders for punchy warmth and clear mids without excessive zing up top. That's what I'm using on one of my basses right now and I like the firmer feel of the hex core. I've tried both SB and PB in the past, but they were a little too loose-feeling (= too flexible) for my taste.

I like both the Sunbeams and Pure Blues well enough to keep a couple of basses strung with them, but I'm still mostly a Hi Beams kinda guy. They do both have a "softer" easier on the fingers feel than the Hi Beams though.
I've gone back and forth between Pure Blues and Sunbeams, and finally come to rest on Pure Blues, for the reason you stated. Sunbeams, to me, are kind of unique because they do have warmth and bottom, yet they have some (kind of ugly, in my opinion) clank on top. Pure Blues bring the punchy mids.
