So *****, it sounds like you don't like having a conversation with these guys because they don't talk about baseball enough and your estimation of what constitutes a worthwhile conversation includes substantive discussion of, if not baseball, at least baseball players. And while you admit that maybe So and So used baseball as an analogy in a conversation once, it still doesn't constitute a worthwhile conversation.

See the problem still is, I personally don't consider that a particular TOPIC of conversation is the primary contributor to a conversation's quality. That, to me, comes from the ability of the conversationalist to communicate their meaning. Some do it in such a way that I'm made aware of the beauty of the language, some in the ability to reduce complex ideas to simple and universal expressions, some in their ability to push the conversation in a myriad different directions while maintaining the original thread throughout the entire fabric.

I especially think it's pointless in the extreme to measure one expresson of personality against another. Sure, if someone is not succeeding in their expression (or specifically their expression of themselves gets all tied up in being an amalgam or "impression" of someone or several someone else's personality), then you can talk about the success or failure of that. But to find fault in someone not being more like someone else is just pointless. You can like or not like Jackson Pollock. But to not like him because he isn't Cezanne is just stupid.

Drew has one of the ballsiest sounds I've ever heard. Maybe the single most punch-in-the-gut badass growl and sustain and force of any bassist I've yet listened to. I can't get enough of his sound... that's the big selling point for me.

Check out "Bas Relief" on his album.

Sorry to dig this one up but...

I bought the newest Ravi Coltrane at the same time that I bought a few others. I listened to it once. Liked it. Didn't listen much for a few weeks. About two weeks ago I really listened. Holy cow. Everyone's playing is great. Drew just knocks me out though. Not only does he have a great sound and great intonation but his ideas kill me. He is not extremely flashy yet makes every note demand your attention. I just can't say enough. Same on the Fred Hersch live at the Vangard. Drew truly does make you say 'wow'.

I just did a couple gigs with a terrific sax player who's played in a couple of groups with Drew Gress and we both couldn't stop commenting on the great sound Drew gets all the time. I described it as very clear and warm; he as very focused and open. Great player and from what Andrew says, great guy as well. :smug:

Since i am on a Drew Gress kick i see there is a new album out this year with Marc Copland(also..bump :) ):
Back in August, got to hear this rhythm section with Dave Liebman and Ralph Alessi at Birdland, in particular Joey Baron was just transcendental.
