Double Bass Drew Gress WOW !!!

Drew already sounding phenomenal in 1989... a whole album - just remastered and reissued - of standards, trio with Eskelin & Phil Haynes

Forms, with that same trio, was a big one for me (not that anybody here cares, but it was.)
Check out also Joint Venture - Ways and Mirrors which is those guys and the late, great trumpeter Paul Smoker. All those recordings were around the same time.

And since we're talking about Drew, his record Heyday, which came out on Soul Note in '95 (Dave Binney, Ben Monder, Kenny Wollesen) is just fantastic. I hadn't listened to it in a really long time, so I gave it a spin last week and I was really happy I did.

Yeah, 'Forms' is great! For some reason I don't think I've ever checked out the quartets with Smoker, I will do

Was funny reading back through this old thread - reading myself nearly 25 years ago is a bit weird! But my enthusiasm for Gress' playing hasn't dimmed at all in that time
