I've got this Ampeg V-2 guitar head from about 1973. Sounds excellent with bass. To get tube drive at lower volume, I've got to use the extension Master Volume knob. It's still not as thick as I'd like at lower volumes.

I'm not looking for any sort of tube overdrive emulator. I want something to put in front of the amp that'll just drive the living poop out of it! I'd also like it to not cost a lot of cash.

What should I check out here?

Short answer: MXR Micro Amp. Long answer: search here (and on pedalgeek.com) for "boost". There are a million and one clean boost pedals out there which all work great on bass and are all specifically designed to drive a tube amp into overdrive.

Thanks. I wasn't really sure what term to use in a search. I knew overdrive would turn up all sorts of OD emulators, but I couldn't think of another word for what I wanted.
