Driver: damaged wire between posts and voice coil

I have a 15inch driver which is cutting out because the thin braided wire between the VC and the binding posts has deteriorated and frayed so only a couple of strands are left on the post.

I believe its thermal damage because one rehearsal I saw bright light coming from the cab (a PA cab) and stopped playing immediately.... then thought maybe it was lightbulb protection but it turns out the crossover on the tweeter does not have a lightbulb. Ouch!

Anyway....best approach for a repair? its a bit awkward to get a soldering iron in there. The wire is intact as it enters the cone itself.

In all likelyhood the light you saw was the two leads touching, which also caused the damage. Replacing the tinsel leads is a job for a pro, find a local reconing service.

There is enough 'unravelled' hanging loose they could have easily touched and caused a short. I'll take it to my local speaker place.

Before you have it re-coned, try the soldering iron approach. You have nothing to lose. It worked for me once (to my surprise)...

By all means, I referred him to a reconing service as they would have access to tinsel leads and the expertise to replace them. They aren't an item that one can buy at the local Rat Shack.
