My band is currently in the process of finishing up material for an album. I wrote a lot of the material and most of it is in drop C#. I posted a while back while I was looking for a 2nd bass for alt tuning.. basically one I could just leave tuned half step down and I was kind of intrigued by the short scale bass's as I had never tried one before. Anyways I was told by a few people that shorties were not the best for drop tuning mainly due to the string tension. I almost gave up the idea but I played a bunch of different shorties and fell in love with the Gretsch G2220 Junior jet II. I ended up picking one up and quickly tuned it half step down. Still sounded great. So dropped the low string to C# and it sounded bad ass! I made a couple adjustments... string height and truss rod. Got the action where I wanted it and man this thing sounds like an animal. The strings are not floppy at all. The low string is a little looser than normal obviously but totally playable. At the moment I'm just using the strings that came on it 45-105 but have some EB regular 45-105 on route. Anyone else tune their SS in drop tunings?
