Drum Genius and IRIG 2 HD ipad - need Audiobus?

Hi all,

I just got an IRIG HD 2 to replace a failing Korg Pandora that I use for practice (headphones). I also got an ipad air - but I'm a android guy. Many ipad apps (like Drum Genius) do not have a volume level in the app so it always gets sent to the IRIG at the max.

Is Audiobus the only thing that could help here? Am I missing some built-in mixer for the ipad audio routes? Is using GarageBand a better idea - but I think (have read) that in order for apps to appear in DAWs like this then you still need Audiobus AND the app has to support it of course.

You could use Garage Band:

Audiobus 2 is also very good at routing audio but it doesn't do recording.
Amplitube has it's own little built in DAW also.

Also seems like inter-app audio is being deprecated - and Audiobus is based on that too. A big jump to AUv3. I wonder if this means iOS multi-app stuff is going to be rocky for a whiles. Perhaps I should sell my new IRIG and start using my Xair and Mac even for practice

So I've exhausted this research. I'm abandoning DrumGenius for apps that do support IAA (Audiobus), AUv3 or at least have an app volume control. It's a shame as all the loops sound great but it's very much a standalone app without active development.

Ultimately, it's the latency in the IRIG HD 2 that is going to make me return it. It's tolerable in its own app (Amplitube) but in any other iPad app (this is latest gen) it's not. Garageband is the worst even if you follow the online advice and turn off every effect on the monitoring.

My search continues but for the moment I'll try to reinstate the Pandora. I do like the idea of practicing with a DAW on the iPad - but nervous about trying more expensive interfaces.

I think I will try another interface but also switch from Garageband to some other (read: better) DAW too.

BTW The developer of DrumGenius said he is working on the new iOS inter-app audio stuff! Also it works today in Ableton. Which is great as the loops are fantastic.

I see the Focusrite interfaces come with a lite version of Ableton. I'm a Reaper person these days (on the Mac) but might be fun to learn a new one. I just want to do simple stuff on the iPad. However, the Xsonic Xtone looks like a fun one.
