Drummer doesnt show...

...and it gets shrugged off! Yay!

It must have lapsed his mind *yet again* that we are due to record our 2nd EP, play two shows by this Saturday, and live up to the band agreements. The solution to this was supposed to be: stated/described/agreed-upon/scare-the-living-$@#&-out-of-you/live-up-to in our written band agreement. We all signed it and felt that our BL firmly put her foot down on problems creeping up. But tonight he just broke two parts: Lack of Communication (he went dark for a period of 4 hours and then just said "yes" when asked if he still can do the show) and Being Extremely Late/Tardy (didnt show obviously). This is an ongoing issue with the guy, only the first time after the band agreement.

Question: Should I give the BL the "its him or me" talk ...or just jump ship after our Saturday gig?

Band meeting time, put it out there, flakes get a warning, then if it happens again, tell BL to put plan in action to boot said drummer, if she cant maybe its time someone else became the BL to make some decisions. Make sure it doesnt impact your gigs and let any venue owners down

Hire a sub, delay the recording, then start auditioning replacements. No reason to give a flake like this another opportunity.

A tiger does not change it's stripes. You're kidding yourselves if you think another warning is going to change his behavior and bring a different result.

Why didn't he show for the gig?!? This is a two-parter:

*His reason

*What you think really happened.

Answer first, then proceed. Do you really need to have a band meeting to embellish the importance of showing up at scheduled gigs?!?

Be very wary of what I call "toxic" so-called musos. They will drag you down and they WILL totally **** you up in terms of being happy doing what you want to do. I lost nearly ten years of my musical career between the ages of about 23 and 33 trying to make things work with people whom I now realise were a waste of time. They were just talking the talk and never going to do anything. I could have been gigging for those ten years. I'm a lot older now and more musically active than I've ever been, and it's all down to being with the right people (in several different contexts).

I still resent the years I missed out on and I'll not get that time back. Find someone worth spending time with, musically speaking.

In the hospital, sudden and unexpected = O.K.
Dead = O.K.
In Jail = your discretion

any other excuse... Buh Bye

Hospital - agreed.

Dead - OK, but I want two days notice.

Jail - again, for what?

Abducted by aliens - OK but I want pics of the spaceship's interior but not of the anal probe.

Wrinkle in the time / space continuum - impossible as no drummer can begin to comprehend quantum physics.

Forgot - at least he's honest.

Question, does hiring a sub always work out and does it depend on, the band, genre, the level of musicianship, if and how many rehearsals are required.

Reason I ask, I saw a band recently with a subbed drummer and it was obvious and the show was not the same ( I had seen this band before)

Im not seeing where the OP clarified what his drummer did not show up to... was it rehearsal? A gig?

My apologies. Our drummer didnt show to our rehearsal on Tuesday for our gigs, one tonight (Wednesday) and one Saturday (a large one for us). He knows his parts, we know ours, but our new rhythm guitarist needs work. It was well understood that since the BL wants everyone in on these two gigs we would need to get every minute of practice in that we could. Drummer just killed the chance of tonights gig going smoothly for the new guitarist. Also its just good common sense to get the set rehearsed before a show and he blew that for the band.

We have had subs for various instruments and they work out decently enough. I'm sure someone could sub on bass just fine. Goodfellas! Heck yes! ...if the world worked like that hah :hmm:

Gonna stress that being a BL trumps friendship if her dream of making it in music is going to happen. We will see what happens tonight of course though.

FORGOT ???

FORGOT ?, you can't be serious.

Darn tootin'! I've heard it before although it doesn't mean it's the truth.

Apparently, you didn't have problems with the "alien abduction" or "time / space continuum" as plausible excuses. Those were the byproducts of too-much prescription cough medicine.

Still waiting to hear back from the OP!

IMO, the guitarist soul bepracticing with recordings.

No problem with those, They just didn't occur to me.
Like you, I too would require photographic evidence.

Ya know, after re-reading the each post, I don't recall anybody mentioning possible issues with drugs and/or alcohol (other than my cough syrup reference). Addictions are a downward spiral to hell...I can't even begin to make a joke about it.

So the drummer had to work later than planned and didnt keep us updated. BL didnt explicitly say it but this looks like a case of "I forgot". I'm going to call the play early and say the whole thing will get shoved under the bed and forgotten/shrugged off in the end. Counter-play will be a "sayonara" from me after this Saturday.

BL aint the BL she thinks she is.

Edit: Drugs are on their own time. If someone's out of it, I'm out of the band.
