Drummer over playing

He's a great guy, but a poopiee drummer. Honestly, I'd rather have to play with an arse that can play than an amateur. . . Find someone else.

This might also be my first reaction..However, have you been recording the gigs and the rehearsals? There is nothing more sobering than hearing one's self in a playback. You can't hide from it. All the excesses and poor-timing should be right there for him and everyone to hear all laid bare. Just a thought.

Overplaying (on any instrument really) doesn't add to a song. It takes away from it. Often , overplaying will screw up other members of the band. Over playing will not get a cover band drummer into the R n R Hall of Fame. Overplaying would get just about any session player fired. And for my final piece of sage advice , the fewer notes you play , the more you will get paid for each one of them. If you want to play drums , do it with a set of headphones on in your basement. If you want to play songs , play the damn song and join a band. Copy this and show it to your drummer.

Audition for a new drummer or find another gig for yourself. Or be miserable the next few months. Your call

Our band is going through the same same thing. Drummer is a super nice guy and good band mate except he can't remember beginnings and endings. Has no feel for funky beats. Can't remember the simple beat patterns to new songs. We've started and stopped songs because he's playing the wrong beat - twice. I've never train wrecked before and I absolutely hated it. AND just to keep you on your toes he'll start songs without the obligatory 'four stick' intro. He makes a band of very talented folk sound like a group of strangers at an 'open stage' jam.

He's a nice guy but I find myself being short with him. I hate that he's driven me to that point because I'm not like that.
