Drummers who became bassists

Hmm, not sure if I'd like to call myself a drummer. But as I read rhythm quite well, have a few ideas of my own and can hold a pair of mallets, I quite often get called to play assorted percussion. Actually rehearsing with a string quartet this evening, bringing a snare and some cymbals instead of the double bass...

I play guitar and drums and started playing bass about 8 months ago. Now, I play both bass and drums at my church. Can I get a number? Thanks!

Rick - I've really been thinking about a Roland sound module. Only interested in drums (I love my K's!). How do you like your Roland sounds?

I have the TD-9KX2 (which they don't make any longer) at home and another one at church and I like it. I don't use too many of the Roland stock sounds though. Most of them are from: V Expressions LTD | Home It's great to be able to put on the headphones and practice or play along with songs and not bother anyone else in the house!

Not sure if this thread has any life any more, but cool to see that I'm part of an exclusive club of ex-drummers :D

Been playing drums in various bands for about 20 years, and noodled on guitar at home for about 30. Bought a cheap bass for my home studio about 5 years ago, and then didn't really play it for a couple of years.

When my current band found itself without a bass playerthree years ago, I started noodling around on my bass to record demos and on rehearsals, and it didn't take long before I got hooked. I requested that I be moved to bass duties and that we instead started looking for a drummer.

So now I'm a bass player, and we found a drummer who's way better than I ever was :laugh:

I think a big part of the switch for me (other than bass being a lot of fun) was that now that I'm a father and I no longer live close to our rehearsal space, drums were becoming increasingly impractical. I had no real way of ever playing drums outside of our weekly rehearsals. With bass, I can jam at home with headphones whenever I want (well, whenever family life doesn't require my attention), which is really freeing.

Here's one of the last shots from my drumming days, from the recording sessions for our latest album - I played both drums and bass on the album, since it was recorded before we found our new drummer.

Oh, I didn't intend to. I think I'm a reasonably solid drummer, but I'm not all that versatile. I can play that hard hitting rock all day long though :D

I've really just taken that skill set and moved it over to the bass. I still can't play anything remotely funky or jazzy, but I can ride a rock groove without breaking a sweat.

Another here... I started on drums but did not think I was very good. There were 3 of us who would rotate at my church. I decided I needed to do something else. Worked out best for everyone. I realized that drums were not as easy as I thought. Every limb has to do a different job. I think bass was really in my blood. Both of my parents played guitar.

My story is kind of odd, I started out on playing guitar very little when my parents took my sisters and I to see "Beatles Love" in Las Vegas and I was into the whole world music thing had a bunch of cheap Irish instruments, Scandinavian, Jaw harps blah blah, and some cheap classical guitar no name brand. I ended up on bass since I thought it was cool and how I played my cheap classical, then I started playing drums but it was so hard to practice them and setting up in a small house, being loud etc and not feeling like getting an electronic, I play bass and love it more now :D! But I do like to mess with my practice pad here and there and hope to add some kind of Electronic kit later on. Armand Sabal-Lecco, one of my favorite bassist started on drums then went to bass, a lot of bassist I like seem to started on drums! Anyway end of my story lol
