Drummers who became bassists

Dave Grohl started on drums (most famously, Nirvana), then later played guitar (most famously, Foo Fighters). He also played bass on a solo release.

I was one of those pesky drummers for many years. The first years I spent gigging were behind a kit.

I kind of miss the drums, it was fun, but I certainly don't miss all the extra gear hauling that was involved. My last kit was a Simmons e-kit bought in the late 80's. So if I ever did go back to drums I'd definitely go the e-kit route again.

If nothing else, I do believe that having played drums I have a good sense of timing and how to play bass with the rhythm section.

Did you play the drums before the bass?

I initially took up the flute (and stunk at it!), keyboards, and bass because I didn't want to haul my drums around anymore. Also - I always wanted Simmons drums. An SDS-V with the riot shield pads. I still do!

That kind was also my thing with drums. I honestly enjoyed it but hauling it was such a pain and I never found really any good one in all compact cases or backpack type of stuff. Could use travel gear, while it's true bass has some stuff to haul to, drums has a lot extra pieces lol!

Im a drummer (sessions, and promotor for Yamaha Drums) foremost for 29 years, and started dabbling in bass playing some years ago.

I play drums left handed, and bass right handed.

That is true.

After so many years I just made peace with it and made sure a new instrument would be right handed for ease of many things

Its not a big room so those K&M desk mounts came in very handy.
