Drummers who twirl their sticks

I played a couple of shows this weekend with a drummer I never played (nor rehearsed) with before. Every time I looked at him he was twirling his sticks while playing. Every time!

Would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on that .

I'm not bothered by it one way or another if the drummer can play. I will say it adds to the show.

I consider it showmanship and entertainment, from an audience perspective. But it's the very thing that gets misconstrued as "showing off" by some musicians, causing them much irritation it would seem.

As long as they do it tastefully, as in not in the middle of a song and not between every song, it adds to the audience experience.

One of the best drummers I ever worked with would twirl his sticks sometimes. His groove was impeccable, so it didn't bother me (or anyone else) a bit.

I don't care if the drummer has a spinning helmet shooting confetti out of it if they're keeping time immaculately. Anything less then "immaculate" and still twirling means fire the drummer, naturally.

I'm a drummer, and while I do twirl my sticks periodically, I'm very guilty of is "flipping" my right-hand stick (toss a stick in the air and flip it 360-degrees before catching them) during moments of rest on the drums. I've never dropped one during a gig or rehearsal... yet... I'm just waiting for the moment when we're in a particularly quiet section and I'm back there flipping away only to drop one on my hats, snare, the rim of my rack tom, etc.

Dude, up until the VERY end...that bass player could NOT have been more chill LOL. Seeing the drummer get nuts and he's just sitting there all calm and barely moving was great.
