when i've played bigger shows: sometimes the drummer could get away with it: just to be, well...showy. but i'm usually doing jazz gigs/shows these days and the drummers don't seem to care about that (twirling the sticks): i'n sure there are those cats who can, but at a jazz show it's not cool to be too flamboyant...until it's time to solo, maybe. having said that, there are many jazz guys who have 'affectations' that serve the show.
but i would advise: groove first.
also: once you've seen it, it's not so spectacular...less is better than more, IMO.
