Dual coils capable of hum free two way coil split?

Are you wanting the ability to run a single coil of a single pickup?

If not, the Ernie Ball HH circuit is really flexible. I rewired a friend’s Warwick $$ this way recently. I used off-the-shelf Duncan MM pickups and a five-way super switch with an Audere four-band preamp. Each of the five switch positions is hum-canceling. It sounds fantastic!

Oddly enough, I'm currently building 2 basses that are almost the same as what you're having done (birdseye tops). I'm using the Nordstrand Big Split Man pickups, which is a quad coil MM type that is beefed up.
I'm also doing a 4-way rotary switch to have the ability for either coil and then both in series and parallel. Hoping for this to be an incredible bass setup.

I can't recommend Nordstrand enough for their pickups in this type and they do custom stuff as well. Great people to deal with, too.

Tremendous pickup and will do what you want. Two of those will be some serious coin, but if you like Nordstrand products you will be in heaven. I have delano pickups in one of my 4 string Mayones basses and they pair well with my Mike Pope Pre so that is a good contender too. IMO they are brighter so your concerns with the graphite neck may have merit.

I have enjoyed MM basses with the humbucker splitting similar to what you describe - inners, outers, etc. I have built parts basses with big quad coils. Truth told if building another one tomorrow I would use a set of BC sized big splits and a pre with a blend pot. They are great pickups. The coil switching is more of a gimmic and complication than a useful tool to me. Most times when people are discussing MM HH coil options, the favorite positions are inner coils and all coils. Everything else sounds weird to me and apparently to some others too. I have a MM HH Gamechanger that allows you to program ANY combination of coils, series, parallel, etc. Literally hundreds of different possible combinations. Sounds best with inners only sent parallel. Just something to think about.

Yeah the Big Splitman looks great, definitely an option.

I get what you are saying about having too many options, I used to feel that way but in recent years have been more into tweaking.

I bet it does. I still want the option of doing both rear coils of each pickup or both front coils of each though

What, I didn't even see that thread! That's crazy, we are going for a similar vibe for sure. I want two pickups though, one in the 60s bridge position, the other in the p position (more or less). I subbed that thread to follow your progress. I am slowly gathering parts as a way of budgeting myself, so this build probably won't start until the fall.

We offer several models with wiring for switching, but are you asking for something that is hum canceling in all modes of operation or just in parallel and series? At present the only models that are hum canceling in all modes are the MM4.4, MM5.4 and the BigSplitMan. But if you’re looking for models that will allow you to do series, parallel and single coil, the list expands:

- BigRigs
- BigSplitMan
- Dual Coils
- MM4.2
- MM4.4

Very cool. Not sure how I missed the 2 pickup thing in your description, but yeah, you can totally do something like you want with switches and 2 of these quad coil pickups.
The 4 way rotary was something I couldn't even find a proper diagram for, but was able to figure it out. And with the various different options for switching out there, there's no doubt that the wiring scheme you want is capable of being done. Hell, I did the math and figured out with 3 rotary switches and 2 pickups, I could make 40 different sounds happen.

Let me see if I can figure something out on that. Do you prefer blade or rotary switching? Or are you in for multiple switches for options?

And I'm looking forward to seeing your build come to fruition as well!

Thanks but I am having Dan Ransom do all the electronics and setup. I am just the idea guy! Dan is the best unknown luthier, he has done work for a ton of big companies, Modulus, Alembic, among others. He does top notch work. The plan is to use two three way switches for the coil options (one switch for each pickup).

I am leaning towards the Big Splitman over the Barts now
