Dude, really, a Fender?!

This is America. Don't let one random dude decide what bass you should use. Next gig, play a couple songs with each, then ask the whole audience to vote. Show of hands, applause-o-meter, whatever. If you're gonna please the audience, then please the whole audience... oh, wait, there's no pleasing everyone.;)

Long story as short as possible. I played a Rick 4003 with my band for about two years and love it, still have it. Then I got a precision 63 AVRI and started playing it and have been playing it for the last year, love it too. A couple of times in the last year, I played my Gibson Bird.

So we play a gig last night, and this guy who comes to almost all our shows confronts me and says “Really Dude, a Fender?!” and tells me he much prefers the Rick because of the grind and if not that I should play the Bird. He was adamant and very much against Fenders. I smiled and took it in stride but he came up to me twice and said all this. I guess I will switch to the Rick for a while but I wanted to share this anectode and was curious about your thoughts. For what it is worth, I play in a metal band. I’m still shaking my head.
Honestly, my first thought was “alcohol”

Man, I say screw that guy's opinion. Play that P if you like!

A little harsh, perhaps - but I thought it was funny...

Yeah, it's the sort of thing that is probably best kept inside... you can use it to keep up the smile while the idiot finishes his speech, and then just thank him for his insight or something and move on. Staying friendly is far more practical in most circumstances. :)

Kinda weird, I also am not a fan of playing Fenders, but I think they sound great. Hell, they even look perfect.
Maybe that dude is wanting to hear something specific in your tone, or you’re just not cutting through in the mix with the Fender. I would consider all these possibilities. If the dude just hates on Fenders in general than that’s not legitimate. I would ask him to elaborate. Useful information from people in the audience, especially ones that come to multiple venues is gold.

Not necessarily screw, but alter his perception of what he sees, in his mind...

... play whatever you want, you know that. Check this guy at the door, offering up free 5-dimensional shades to him, to 'enhance' his viewing pleasure...

... add he should start 'seeing' with his ears... he'll probably need a hard reboot midway through your first set.

Did you ask him from which TGP thread he got his opinion? ;)

I think he's just used to hearing the upper mids in you Ric, which most likely stands out in the mix better.

If you're getting lost in the mix, then you might either want to brighten up your sound to punch through more with the Fender, or maybe just use the Ric.

Play what ever bass makes you play better, but why not ask the sound guy out front what he thinks.

He may also agree with the guy and says the Ric does better in the context of the band.
