Dumbest reason ever to get fired from a band

well book closed … I went and got my stuff today and I am outta there …

It just reminds me … some of the best moments in my life have been getting out of bands

That poor drummer has been trying to put a band together for 2 years and probably 2 years from now she will still be trying ...

Nope, he did that on personal time. He was drunk at the gigs though.

I just didn't want to be lumped in with a potential statutory rapist. But in my 18-26 age range of playing, there were frequently people in the 15-17 range. Not everyone does dive bars with 50+ year old patrons their entire playing life.

True, it's a text messaging / voice call app that uses your data plan. Seems awfully redundant to the text messaging and phone call function on your smart phone that doesn't. I'm sure it offers some window dressing or some such, but the fact that it used data makes it a non-starter. Even living on the "right side" of the hill in Washington, there is no real ISP available at my house.

Yes, it does suck. But T-mobile thinks they have some signal here...they don't. Landlord (lives in upper floor of house) had a special antenna put up so she could get Verizon access here. Not much chance of me doing something like that for my cell phone.

And Frontier offers fiber optic connections in the general area, but not on our hill. So we have to make do with a slow DSL of about 3mbs. They came out and fixed a problem the other day and now we're occasionally getting 5mbs. Generally, we can count on 3 or just under it.

Supposedly T-mobile is putting some 5G service in the area and offering that for internet use, competing with Frontier. I'll be surprised if it's true, but will be very happy if it is!

Ah ha. I just (apparently wrongly) connected that if he was getting drunk at gigs that you were probably playing establishments that served alcohol and you wouldn't typically find many underage girls.

You're right, it does use data, but we're talking about kbs. In the UK at least, most phone plans are a minimum of about 1 GB with many being 5, 10, 20, 30 and even unlimited, particularly if they're sim card only. If a message is 50 kb and you have 1 GB of data, you can send 20,000 messages (assuming my maths is OK). That's an awful lot!

I haven't been fire by a band, but we do all our organisation by Whatsapp. Frankly, it's crap because the drummer isn't great at communicating by written word, and the guitarist seems to only look at his phone once every 2 days. For context, we are 40, 31, and 30 (me) respectively so you think we'd manage to get Whataspp working.

I have been in bands where a singer or drummer or guitarist had a drinking problem … that always ends badly

A lot YMMV ideas - I use email with a dedicated email address for band stuff. Is it confusing? Sometimes, but I least know where to look for messages. If I need a quick answer, I text, although my phone gets touchy about group texting (it often won't and refuses to tell me why). I don't have much of a use for WhatsApp though I have it. I have never heard of Slack. FB Messenger is another tool I use. It depends on the person I'm trying to get in touch with and what platform they use the most.

I was thinking of dropping out of this band anyway after neither guitar player could play a good version of the opening of "Gimme 3 steps" … not a song I really want to play anyway … but to do the song poorly sucks even more. I stopped them in the middle of the song and told them we either need to play a better version of the song or not play it at all …

So … interesting note ...

I am the BIM manager at an architectural firm and at our staff meeting it came up that some of our clients are not receiving emails from our company e-mail. We use email for a lot of things and it has to work for us, but the amount of spam surpasses the amount of real emails these days and proper spam filtering is a problem.

True, but I think you missed my point. It's not so much that WhatsApp messages are large. It is that there are already services that work as well, without using the service you actually need for other things. Like doing homework, VPN into work, or just paying bills. Also, if you run out of data these apps stop working until your next billing cycle. That guarantees you miss any further messages.

Not to mention services like that generally will "leak" data. Every time it polls for new messages it uses data regardless of whether there was a message for you or not. That is true for all pull services. I'm not sure how pricing structures in Europe are for LTE/Mobile data, but I do know that standard ISP/internet connections in America are more expensive and slower than Europe. And in America, mobile data is far more expensive than landline/broadband internet.

I had a band fall apart because the drummer sent a 'Reply All' email from a private email chain - way at the bottom of the private chain was a discussion about auditions for a guitarist.

But. We hadn't told the current guitarist we were ditching him.

Much hilarity ensued.

My current band uses What'sApp.
