Dwayne Thomas: MonoNeon’s Dad

i think fred thomas is a different cat, doc (i.e., with james brown)--- mono's dad is dwayne. but yeah, dad's got the groove, no doubt!
The story where Dwayne talks about fixing a broken headstock with some wood glue, an infrared light, and some rawhide strips and saying "back in my day, we just tried anything" is the most endearing "dad" thing ever. I love it!

Really like "Phat Bacc" done with Ghost-Note, the Sugarshack Sessions.
The sound MonoNeon gets out of a little acoustic bass is fantastic.
And the spiritual uplift of "Church of Your Heart", (it triggered the memory and message of Mister Wendal).
Coincidentally, just started reading Peter Guralnik's bio of Sam Phillips. I'd known a little about Phillips' views, but didn't know how much he felt he had a mission, why he wanted to record (anyone with a unique sound). He wanted them to get something that they didn't even yet realize that they had inside of them. Very atypical of that time. In a way, a lot of musical history could have only have a occurred in Memphis. The way things came together.
I think Memphis even has it's own gravity that's different than anyplace else. It's palpable.
And also triggered a memory of a Memphis film I'd forgotten.
Story and main character modeled largely on Willis Earl Beal, if I remember right.
I wonder what he's doing these days.

I caught Mononeon at Bottlerock last year. I was in front on the rail. He was a great show. I noted looking at the others standing around me…. Everyone looked like a bass player. So before it started I shouted out “who here plays bass? “They all did.
I just recorded 4 1/2 hours of oral history with my Dad. I recommend doing this. I love hearing the way things were, and Dywane's got some great history.
