Dynabass Passive Rewire Project

My Dynabass is getting a rotor selector 4-way and a blend.

The selector has 2 blend settings, 1 is NN parallel and 2 is NS parallel.

3 and 4 are NN and NS in series.

A tone for each PU for blend. One of the tones for the series for 3 and 4.

Master volume for all settings and a mini toggle mute.

Had to use up all 5 holes somehow!;)

So far settings 1 and 2 work just need to tap in the tones. Then, get the series jumpers in for 3 and 4.

Suppose I could get tone on each PU in series as well, hmm. That one has me stumped at this point.:hmm:

I have wired selector switches to have Superferrites in series and really like the sound. I did find that the fundamental of the neck PU was overpowering and added a trim pot to lower the output of the neck PU down a bit. This let me raise the neck PU height so it would be a good thumb rest, tune in the sound of the series setting and have a better balance between the output of the neck and bridge PUs when I switch between them.

Saw your Dyna and sounds like it was in the same condition as mine. Looks neat and compact, like the dark fingerboard.:)

Mine was black and wired passive like a J with no pc board. The neck was also splitting from the TR and the action was pretty high. I've stripped it and done a Black-Burst Lacquer and steamed the neck straight.

The action is almost like my T-60 now...LOL

NN and NS is about the polarity going in phase and out of phase. (North South and North North) like they do with humbuckers. Don't know if that's the right term...??

Thinking flats or tapewounds. So far I'm getting nice variations of sounds with positions 1 and 2. Gets a bit nasal at the detent on position 2 like the phase switch on my T-60. A really odd sound.:hyper:
 
PUs are normally referred to as Bridge and Neck so the positions are known. Most folks don't know which magnetic pole is up. That can be easily checked with a compass if care is taken to not magnetize it.

Sounds like one of the PUs is wired backwards. Super Ferrite PU coils are wound and internally wired the same. The difference is made when they are magnetized. The red and black wire connections will need to swapped on one PU for them to be in phase. One should have red as the output and the other black as the output. Won't matter which. I believe red is start and black is finish. Shield goes to ground, of course.

Fretboard on my Dyna is light rosewood that I stained with black leather dye. Let it dry, buffed off the excess and buffed in some mineral oil. The leather dye can be removed with lacquer thinner and won't affect most fret markers.

Since you have a T-60, have you joined the T-60 Mafia? If you haven't, look them up. Bunch of good info.

Good luck with your project. Try the trim pot on the neck PU to balance the levels. I believe you'll like it.
 
One had an orange sticker. I don't think the color of the sticker means anything. Main thing is that one is magnetized with North up and the other South up. When the lead wires are reversed when doing the wiring they form an in-phase humbucking pair when in parallel.

That explains it. Trying to interpret all those wiring diagrams- all with humbuckers.

The wiring is reversed to cancel rf noise and the magnets have reversed polarity to maintain signal phase. So wiring the PU's the same on a Dynabass puts them out of phase because of the magnet polarities. Wow, amazing!

Makes perfect sense when you explain it that way.
