Like anything else, I would assume it requires practice.

I've owned one for about 3 years now and it takes some SERIOUS prcatice to get it just right. Also playing at different spots with different positions really opens up the tonal posibilities. I use it with both of my basses with no issues (Fender Geddy Lee Jazz with Rotosound Funkmasters 30-90 and my Fender Roger Waters Precision with Rotosound Steve Harris 50-110)
A short delay/reverb does help with string jumps so it's not so pronouned.
