One of the best necks I have ever played. These E-Series basses are everything they say. This bass is 100% stock and in GREAT shape. I tried to take pictures of the small dings that prevent me from using the word "minty." I will ship if I have to, but I hope to avoid that. For now, this is offered as a local sale.

I have sunburst one just like yours. It was my first bass that I stupidly sold and hated mysekf for doing so. Sold it in 1991. Got it back in 2019. It's even better than I remember.
Great basses! This one won't last long!

Cool bass. What distinguishes the E series from any other Fender bass made in Japan? I have an early 90s "PB57" (late 50s p bass obviously). Good bass for the money.

These E-Series basses are special in a way that is similar to the "Fullerton" basses of the same era. In my view, they are comparable in terms of fit and finish, and build quality. The Fullerton basses have better electronics, I think, but the E-Series basses are otherwise equivalent to the Fullertons. In my reply to Jay this morning, I said this is one of those basses that begins to speak to you the moment you hold it in your hands. This neck is impressive.

Fender Japan certainly didn’t stop building great basses when the E Series ended. Basses out of Fender Japan have been really high quality for their entire production run, as far as I can tell.

Having owned several MIJ Fenders, including an E-Series P bass from ‘86, I can tell you that the necks in the E Series have a slightly different shape (a little rounder than later MIJs) that people seem to really like. I certainly do. I believe the solid color E Series also had alder bodies whereas later solid color MIJs often used basswood.

Overall, I don’t think you’d go too far wrong with any Japanese Fender but the E Series just happened to have been made with a combination of contours, materials and quality that resonate (pun intended) with a lot of people.

so my early 90s PB57 is an E series?

It’s probably just after the E Series ended, but I have no doubt it’s still an excellent bass. I’m only an armchair historian when it comes to Fender but I’ve played a lot from a lot of different eras; if my (sometimes dodgy) memory serves, bodies were still alder, necks may or may not have gotten a little flatter and I think Fender Japan might have gone to slightly narrower tuner ferrules around that time (something they did for only a few years, I think). The quality of everything coming out of Japan in the early ’90s - Fender or otherwise - was still extremely high.

The reason they’re called “E series” is because the serial number starts with an E, so check your serial and you’ll know if it qualifies.
cool, thanks.

Mine is a nice bass for sure, although I replaced the bridge, pickguard, tuners, pickup and electronics.

Sold to JayT aka SirFishALot. Very nice gentleman who communicated well and did what he said he would do. Thank you, Jay.

I'm likely to regret selling this bass.
