EA Doubler high eq issue? (electric bass)

Hi!

I wonder if my ears are playing tricks on me, but I think I'm having an issue with my EA Doubler. It seems like the high eq knob really only affects a very tight, very high band that doesn't seem to add much to the character of the sound - it is more like a 'brilliance' knob. When A/B-ed with my Acoustic Image amp, the A.I.' high eq seems to be low enough to affect 'more' of the bass's output.

I had another set of ears verify what I was hearing. Are we both nuts, and/or is it possible to adjust the frequency the pot affects? Changing the HPF setting inside the unit won't have any impact on sounds of that frequency, right? Any help or ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

Might not be your ears. Some of the earlier reviews of the doubler mention that the frequency of the high control on this is a bit high for some people's tastes, and overall the eq isn't that powerful. The manual mentions its a shelving type bass/treble with different mid frequency centers for the DB and EB channels. I've not really noticed an issue of too little treble on mine, but I usually leave the treble control pretty flat and run into cabs without tweeters, so a ton of top end is likely not what I've been trying to get out of this amp.

As far as I know, the Treble control on the Doubler MkII is set at 4kHz, shelving. The AI Treble control was set much higher at 10kHz, also shelving. AI offered 15 dB of boost or cut while EA offered 12 dB.

The EA Doubler was not designed to add much character or color to your sound. I have a Micro 300, which I believe is the precursor to the Doubler and it's been my experience that if that's what you're looking for, you won't find it with that amp..

Hi! I'm not really looking for coloring - what I am noticing is that it seems to be "muffling" the high end as compared to my other amps (including an old Acoustic Image). I am playing a Lakland 55-02 through it and even with the control on the bass boosted significantly too, I mostly just hear the tinny zing at the extreme top end rather than shelved treble

That does not sound right to me. I have a Doubler Mk II in front of me and, while the controls are subtle, there is no “muffling” at all due to the Treble control. Usually Euphonic Audio preamp circuits are bulletproof, but I wonder if you might have a problem with your unit.

if so, Gary Gibilisco is the person to get in touch with.

Just for laughs, try running your Lakland, with its EQ disabled, through the Doubler or, even better, try out the amp with a passive bass. It’s an outside chance, but you cannot rule out the active circuitry in the bass as being the problem - until you try it and rule it out.
