I had been in a bit of rut lately, so when I heard a young person nailing some classic Earth, Wind, and Fire on Facebook, I thought let’s see how close I can get to note for in an evening of working on one of their songs. I chose a nice ballad from a 1977 album that I heard many times, but never learned. Those same lessons that learned studying Miles Davis soloes about space apply here. I came in a beat to early on one of Verdine White’s vibrato “stings,” and I was discombobulated for a few counts at the end. Still, this was good exercise for getting out of a rut and I am going to nail this song tomorrow!
