Link Ray's Rumble was released in 1958 and was banned in many places because parents or other law abiding citizens feared it was going to encourage youth to start fighting in the streets (having a rumble). This song didn't really cause any actual rumbles as feared but it did result in the birth of guitar distortion which is of course still a thing today.

That’s my take. I’ve always thought so. It sort of evolved out of I’m Down. I like to argue over beers that Paul is the Father of Metal. Good fun. 68 to 69 were the tipping years with so many bands experimenting.

Not exactly…that was Paul trying to keep up with The Who, “I Can See For Miles” in particular. And considering that stuff like Blue Cheer had already come out earlier in 1968(plus what Cream and Hendrix had been up to), it was over for them in that department before they even started. Maybe “TNK”, as mentioned earlier, might count.
