Early SB1 and SB2 Ad Flier

Here is a pic of an ad flier for early SB1 and SB2 basses I got on the bay recently. Pardon my lousy photography. I learned most of this info already from Chef and the other experts here at the G&L Forum on TB, but I thought somebody might be interested in the specs. Posted a pic of my '83 lefty SB2 - love its tone and neck; also really appreciate this forum! BTW, if anyone can explain how to get the pics right into the text box on posts, I would appreciate it - I am obviously not a techie.

Are you turning the pics to a vertical position in your photo editor? It looks like you might have held your camera sideways when you took the pics. If you do that then you have to rotate the pictures before you upload them.

The specs say it's a maple body. That's kind of unusual, isn't it?

Hey waynobass,
I asked Chef the same Q in another post; he said the early SB2s are maple bodies. Ric basses are maple too I think; does anyone know if any other G&Ls basses are? I've got another flier coming from the same seller for early 1K and 2K; will post pics.

The early 2nd gen SB-1 and SB-2 bodies were maple as well:

There are some early examples of the L-1000 with maple bodies, although I don't think this was ever an advertised option:

Maybe L2Ks as well? Hard to say with G&L. They did a lot of mixing and matching and there are a ton of "transitional" models out there.

Thanks Madcity Fats. Here are pics of the 1K/2K flier. You are right, it says only body wood choices are ash, poplar, and mahogany. It also shows a chrome plate for controls, that makes this flier early 80s I think?

If you can make out the pole pieces on that pickup in the flier, that might tell you. 1980 L-series basses had large hex adjustable poles. In '81 these were switched to slot poles and in '82 they became small hex. Hard to tell between the hex sizes from a photo probably, but if those poles are slotted you can be sure it's a 1981 advertisement. A lot of the ads like that I see on eBay are listed as '81. Production at G&L didn't really start until mid 1980, which might explain the scarcity of ad fliers for that year.
