earplugs what to look for?

I just got these...Hearos High Fidelity. I haven't tried them yet. The drummer uses them and likes them.

i guess playing at a reasonable volume is out of the question, eh?

I would recommend this plus using custom made earplugs.

Otherwise, if its a really loud gig then the cheap foam earplugs are the best for sheer volume reduction.

There is no such thing as sound quality when your ears are in very real pain.
