First, I was the one who was going around and trying to find company, which will be willing to re-create Acoustic Black Widow. Some friends, I contacted did not see the benefit of it. Some said, GC might get on their back and sometime in last Summer I contacted Eastwood, who later decided to recreate it.
I was the first to sign up and I tried to promote it.
Finally, 2 days ago, arrived at the door.
It was double boxed.
After opening the box, I found guitar in Eastwood marked gig bag.
Inside gig bag was the actual bass...
It is chambered body, 32" scale, one pick up, one vol, one tone, binding with white-black-white, zero-fret!
The neck is very thick, C shape.
Fret board had typical "Made in China" issue, truss rod was too tightened. I had to untwist it for 180 degree (half turn).
So, I left it day or two in air-conditioned room to workout itself. Initially, 14th fret was too high. Bridge intonation was way off. Factory strings were too bright and uneven in sound, level and everything else.
After day and half I decided to install a new Roto Sound RS66 strings. I expected to have the same level of bite as the factory strings. I have several other instruments and each has a different strings or settings for the sound diversity.
Well, well, well...
With a new strings, bass got more depth, then with factory strings! Single pick up has it own "gravel" sound compared to active Fender P bass. But, with more "fart" effect than P bass. Pure sensational discovery. I love it.
After 2 days, neck came back and that 14th fret was even with the others (???). Just very little correction of truss rod needed. Bridge should be better, I expect to replace it with hi-mass bridge very soon. But, even with this bridge, sustain is very good.
Very vintage look and the sound!
It has a little neck dive and it's pretty light (7.5 pounds).
Except for the thick neck, everything on this thing looks good, sounds well and I can see the bright future for it in the bass World.
Can you buy better bass for that price? Sure you can. But, for uniqueness and really good sound, $549 is not much.
I recommend it for rock, blues, classic rock, maybe even for vintage funk. During the weekend, I will try to record couple of sounds with (of course) - vintage Acoustic amp
