J routes gives you alot of direct drop-in options, but I would disagree that it's good if you plan to route for other pups. A longer route actually decreases your options. You can always take a smaller route and make it bigger, but a long Jazz bass pickup route means that you can't use alot of the pickups that would be more similar to actual RD pickups (IIRC are smaller than a J) without adding a pickup surround which is a dead giveaway of a bigger route or making a custom pickguard. You saw this alot with basses modded for Darkstars a few years back. P and J routes are both bigger than Darkstars (which aren't small pickups) so there were alot of basses with pickup rings of varying levels of quality.

I dig it. If I didnt currently have a bass at the luthiers getting a complete refret, I would drop the $ on one.
