EB-0 Mod - weight

I'm starting to modify an Epi EB-0 just for fun. I'm new to modding.

I have a long list of things I'd like to try but the first issue I'd like to look at is weight. This tiny short scale is way to heavy. I'd like to take a least a pound off of it or more.

I looked under the pick guard and there is no cavity underneath.

Is there any downside to routing out a huge cavity there to lighten things up?

BTW I'm not a purest in any way and my plans are to make this bass look post apocalyptic eventually. I just want to keep it playing well.

even if you could, as soon as you make the body lighter you wouldn't be able to play it without having to physically hold up the neck with your left hand the entire time.

You can route away (or sand) a lot of the body to lighten the weight. What you don't want to mess with is the part the neck attaches to all the way to the bridge. That is the foundation. Leave that part alone and of course wherever the electronics are.
You can either route holes in the body (all the way through to the back if you like) or just sand the body thinner like Ibanez does on their SR series.

OK, thanks. I think I'll try a smaller cavity under the pick guard and sanding some other parts. I'll try to get 1lb off somehow.

Has anyone tried a 1 meg pot to brighten up that sidewinder? I've read somewhere that works, but don't remember where.

While we're discussing weight here, I'd be curious to learn how much variation there is in EB-0 basses? Mine is 8.4 lb, which does seem somewhat heavy for a short-scaler. Anyone else's far off (higher or lower) from that number on your stock EB? And how much lighter were those from the '60s? Thanks to all.
