EB vs. SG shape?

Hi.

EB's are as rare as hens teeth over here (yes, Comic Book Guy made a huge score across the pond I know http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=574137), so I can't compare them side by side.

I'd like to make an EB (SG-shape) copy, and I'd like it to be as exact in body shape as possible.

I do have a 75' Gibson SG Special, or what ever the tremolo version with only 2 humbuckers was called, and I was thinking of copying that.

Is it (the contours and such) the same?

If not, what are the differences.

Have the contours changed over the years? Not including the early EB-O's of course.

For the naysayers of exact copying, rest easy. I have a hunch that the body&neck material choice I have in mind will leave no doubt that it's not a Gibson .

If the project materializes, there will be a build thread as the material is a bit unconventional. Not unique or unheard of or anything, just unconventional.

yeah, they changed all the time. The Gibson EB0 and EB3 bodies stayed the same as each other, but altered every year or two.

See this page that shows some [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] or this one that shows the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] area (neck joint)

As you can see there is no standard.. although by shipping figures 1969 was the peak year, so perhaps that would be a standard of some sort

Thanks evilLordJuju for the link, exactly what I was looking for.

Seems like my 75' (74?) guitar matches the 69-70 EB's for some strange reason, by the shape of the beveling and the the shape of the neck heel.

I don't know that for a fact, but since AFAIK Explorers are, and Thunderbirds/Firebirds are, it's hard to imagine that Gibson would've used special tooling just to produce a handful (to them) instrument bodies.

I may as well have incorrect information. If I do, feel free to set me straight.

If they are, not by much.

I don't have a Gibson Thunderbird, but when I compared the outline of an Epi and a Gibson in a shop they were identical. My 91 Gibson Firebird fits in the Epi T-bird case perfectly and the outline is the same.

The contours, thicknesses, construction and the overall appearance between the Epi's and Gibsons differ obviously quite a bit.

Ah, my guess is from having a T-Bird in my hands, and seeing a F-Bird on a far wall.
