Ebay 2 cubic foot bass cab with a 15 report

I like to do things myself as much as possible. Not always the cheapest way, but I enjoy the task and I love to compare my results and learn things.

I am not a carpenter, but I am fascinated by the sound of different cabinets. There is an Ebay seller who makes excellent cabinets for filling with the driver of your choice. I happen to have a few drivers laying around. I did some calculating and the smallest bass cabinet they sell has an external dimension similar to the famous Bag End cab. A cube.

I estimated the interior dimensions based on the thickness of the plywood and figured that the interior dimensions of this cab are very close to 2 cubic feet. It has a four inch long and four inch wide port. I plugged these numbers into WIN ISD and found that my Faital Pro 15PR400 might be a good match. So I ordered one.

The box arrived and it is indeed an excellently constructed plywood box with expertly applied black Tolex cover and metal corners and rubber feet. I also ordered the optional metal grill and it makes for a very handsome, understated package.

I'm happy to report that after lining the box with r11 pink insulation, and doing nothing to the port length, that this is an excellent combination. I have been playing bass for about 30 years. I have used a lot of cabs over the years, but I have always favored ones with EVls and JBL K140s. I also have a couple of custom cabs filled with Eminence 3015s, that work well.

With the FaitalPro 15 these speakers present as warm with articulate mids. The sound is a little raw in the upper mids and that helps the tone poke through the mix a bit, but not too much. One band mate was complimentary of the sound and felt that this was one of my better sounding rigs.

I build a lot of basses to experiment with woods and pickups, etc and so far I have been able to get a variety of quality sounds with a P with Delano vintage pickups, and a PJ with Nordstrand pickups. I love how this box sounds.

Since there is not a lot of information on these cabs, I thought I might add this to the great conversation.

Since I also have some other popular 15 inch speakers I will pop those in and report how they sound as I have time to do so.

years ago, when I was looking for a modern, Neo clone of the K140, I was pointed toward the Faital. It's the closest I've come to that same sound, but not quite identical. Some audio would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not set up for any kind of useful recording. I do have a double 15 K-140 rig, but it is in a fairly large box, closer to 7 cubic ft. (LDS made it for me).

I did try it with my Yorkville Bassmaster this morning with the graphic EQ. I was was able to get meaningful adjustments at 60Hz. I was pushing the yorkville and got some nice deep grind. Plenty of highs for this bassist as well. Not sure sure if I should get another one and make a nice little rig from it, or try out their larger box, which is essentially a TL 606. I have a nice JBL 2205a that measures well nicely in a 3.2 cu ft box.

I think that's about what they go for. US Speakers also has them.

I am liking the Faital speaker a lot. The more it breaks in, the better it sounds. And so far it seems to be taking on the character of the basses I have played through it.

Partially because on eBay, each color of each model is listed separately and then empty and loaded. On his website, all those permutations are options under each cabinet type.

And then, for some reason there is no category for the loaded bass guitar cabinets. But, if you search "bass guitar cabinet" on his website, there they are.

14 year follow up. I still got this thing. It sounds good. I changed the driver to a phillips model neodnium magnet. Sounds good. About as good as the Faitl pro. To answer the original questions. The Faitl pro speakers sound a bit like JBL K-140s, but a slightly muted highs. It is otherwise smooth. More smooth than the Eminence Kappalite 3015. But the Kappalite's irregularities make it more prominent in the mix. They are all very good drivers.
