Ebay Bass Cabs

So my cab is kinda screwed, i over extended one of the speakers and now it farts worse than after I eat jack in the box.

So i'm lookin at new cabs and I found these on ebay,

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these guys or off-name brand cabs in general from Ebay? They're cheapy cheap, less than 200 bucks but the 4x10 is rated at 800 watts :bassist: and the 2x15 is 600 with a max of 1200. You guys think they can actually handle that? And if so should I go for the 4x10 or the 2x15, I love to hear the thump but I also love the punch of the 10's. I'm currently running a VT bass pedal through a crown xls 404 power amp into my current cab so at 8 ohms bridged i'm running 900 watts, which absolutely murdered my current crate cab :ninja: I could go the other way and go name brand because there's a Mesa 4x10 for 250 on Craigslist around me but it's more money for less watts and used at that. If it matters for the 2x15 or the 4x10 we play more melodic punk with a woman vocalist. Any help greatly appreciated, danke!

I can't really help with the "should i or shouldn't i". Just try and contact the dealer to see what their return policy is.

But, as far as everything else goes, i'm also in a melodic poppy-punk band with a girl singer and my 2x15 is overkill honestly. While i opted for a 1x15, in this case since it isn't a choice, the 4x10 should be plenty sufficient. Myspace is blocked at work and i can't listen to your stuff, but i suppose 2x15 would be okay if it were a harsher band, but i think it's more akin to what i am doing. We are such a vocal-centric band, if the vox were over shadowed by the bass/guitar/drums, it would totally ruin the experience.

Blah, i rant... long story short, i would say the 4x10! :bassist:

theres a thread around here somewhere about a TB member picking up one of these off brand cabs, i think the consensus is the construction was decent, the sound was ok, nothing special.
go for the mesa, turn max your poweramp and turn your vt down. i think you just went for too much power.

might wanna try to find a used neo cab, they have great power handling.

I have bought 2 Cabs from Seismic Audio, also on Ebay and the cabs (2x10) cost $110 each + shipping. They advertise them for $125 or best offer. These are mosre than adwequate for my needs in Church and I use them along with my Kustom Groove Bass cab 2x15 and they are great and a heck of alot cheaper than those and they apear to be exactly the same.

This is my low cost rig. Behringer head and Seismic Audio cabs. I only have good things to say about them both. Loud, clear, plenty of bottom end. If your ears are on the 'gear snob' tip, maybe you won't like them. But, for me, I'm very pleased with the performance AND the price.

Some of us don't have fat budgets for big name gear but we still want to play music!!!

Any chance you would open up the cabs and see what drivers they're using, to give us an idea of what we're looking at?

There are a lot of "depends on" when you take a chance with this sort of gear. While it may be well priced, it may only suit certain uses. Playing in a church gig wouldn't be too demanding on any cabinet as the acoustics in most churches carry sound clearly for miles, but taking them to a loud, hard rocking bar or venue where you will have to go up against a heavy hitting drummer and a "turn up to 11" guitard may show the weaknesses of such cabinets more easily. I was burned with that sort of thing. I bought a Legion Sound 410 (rated at 1000W, don't let that mislead you) and I figured I would save a few bucks (paid 120 bucks for it off ebay, brand new) and I blew the horn on the second song in the first set. I replaced the horn, next night blew the one of the speakers... I have since replaced the speakers with 4 Eminence Legends, no more problems, so basically I bought the cabinet for 120 bucks. There is a reason why they are priced as such, and it is not to appeal to the music elite. A lot of the times, a wholesaler will unload a pile of speakers onto a company, they make cheap cabs, throw in cheap speakers and sell them for cheap. I am not knocking them, I am sure they are good for practice, maybe good for some gigs, but you do have to focus your gear on the types of gigs you get. My 2 ampeg 410's are much more suited to my type of gigs, style of playing etc. I most certainly can't afford to have my gear go down constantly, so I scrimpted, saved for one ampeg cabinet, and just happened to get lucky finding one on a local used for sale website.

Other downside, myself located in Canada, is the hefty shipping charges they will nail you with. A 410 will weigh anywhere between 45 and 80 lbs, and because I am in Canada, cross border charges are hefty too (especially with UPS).

It is your call, your money, and your gig, you need to do what you think is best. Personally I would go with 410's, depends on the sound of your band and what sound you want for your side of the stage.

Check out the Mesa if it's still available. For that price, it's probably the old Diesel series. If it works, it will destroy any of those disposable Ebay cabs.

Eventually you'd want (or need, if it broke) to upgrade the MDF cabinet to something better. With the Mesa, you might one day want to try something different, but there isn't much that's better. If you did end up selling off the cab you're thinking of getting, the noname cab might bring you $50 if you're lucky; the Mesa should bring you $250 (or more, if it's in decent shape and you take 10 minutes to clean and ArmorAll it) easily.
