Great demo. You've made several videos over the years with other MM basses. How does this one compare in terms of feel, quality, sounds, etc? I've owned a 4H in the past and intrigued by the new ones.

Great demo. You've made several videos over the years with other MM basses. How does this one compare in terms of feel, quality, sounds, etc? I've owned a 4H in the past and intrigued by the new ones.
GREAT job! I have a SR Special 5H (Cruz teal) Love it, but at times I want a bit more of a scooped Funk/slap sound closer to a jazz bass (*5 string). Do you think the 5HH gets more into that territory? My SR Special 5H isn't going anywhere. If the 5HH is different enough, I might go for a Maple FB model like yours. Welcome your thoughts. Great chops and a sweet touch you have!
Finally got a chance to play one yesterday alongside my Ray4. Went in to GC to pick up a used 2016 Ray34 I had ordered from another store but couldn't take it. Was beat to hell with dents and gouges all over the body, back of the neck and had a chuck missing from the G side fingerboard at the 3rd fret. I have no idea why GC would even sell the thing, much less say it was in "good" condition.
Anyways, I figured I would play the new Special and possibly get one on the gear card. I loved how light they are, super nice neck and the roasted maple was awesome. However, I wasn't thrilled with the tone. The switch to the neodymium pickups and the new preamp make this sound different from the typical, classic Stingray tone IMO. Not saying its worse, its just different. I actually preferred the tone from my Ray4 to be honest, maybe Im a ceramic pickup guy. Anyways, I ended up ordering a used SB14 that was the same price as the Ray34 I returned, hope this one is in much better shape!

The good news, the way I see it, is that for my ears this bass is different from any old Stingray I have and had.
It's another beast, Both sound, EQ and feel wise. It's good news because it means that my 90's Stingray still has its own style and place.
As you can hear the special is much less aggressive and more warmer.
I'll put an A/B test soon.

Much appreciated and looking forward to your video. After my StingRay, I moved to an AVRI Jazz with rounds and an AVRI P with flats - I'm looking to complete the Leo trifecta, but never bonded with the hi-fi trebly sounds of the pre-special models. It probably didn't help that if I looked at the old neck wrong, it would move. Your single H with the EQ you had is what I'm after mostly.

Isn't it amazing? I love how these are impeccably balanced.
I got to try a 4H Special for a short time yesterday. I have a SR5HH with ceramic pickups. It sounded smoother than my SR5 (and I love the tone of my SR5). There's something about that tone! The neck was very comfortable to me. It seemed like on the lower end of the weight average which was nice (my SR5 is about 9 1/2 lbs). And of course the quality of it was top notch.
I'll have to try it again for a longer period of time to see if I can put a 4 string on my radar again, then again I'd also love to try the SR5 Special!

I thought the clear thumb rest would look good against the black pickguard. It stuck out like a sore thumb, so I barely used it.
My zero mod thumb rest is called a neck pickup on a 4HH. Lol!
Are these Stingray Specials shielded under the pickguard and in the pickup cavity, or no shielding?

If they're anything like past models, they probably use shielding paint in the cavity. Most pickguards have shielding on the underside as well, but not the clear one, for obvious reasons. They included optional shielding, but I put it to the side. Haven't noticed any noise.
