EBMM StingRay Special Club

I’m not sure how their stock looks now but I used American Musical Supply, who I just learned let you shop by serial number/weight for certain models
I bought from sweetwater. Buying lots of stuff from them lately. They list weights so the choice between burst and blue got made by weight. Then they gave me a discount because they inspected it and found a TINY scratch in the fingerboard. Cool company.
Super hot. I'm getting incredibly undecided about the color combo, but so far, my leads are:
black / maple OR natural / maple
I already have a black / ebony Stingray, so I'm leaning towards getting something different this time.
To me it seems mellower and the pole pieces are less “noisy”. I got the HH and have primarily using the middle position and loving it
From what I've heard on youtube, they sound closer to the 2 band rays now, character wise. I could be wrong ofc, I haven't tried them. They remind me of my Nordstrand MM4.2 + John East MM preamp combo, mellowness wise. Again, all just from youtube clips.
The bridge pickup soloed still has the characteristics of the old Stingray. There’s just a lot more options there and the preamp is useable all over the dial to me.
How's the neck stability on Specials? I've never had an oil/wax finished bass necks, so this would be something new. I did try a Stingray with that neck finish in the store once, and liked the feel. Feel wise, I don't have a preference, only stability wise. Does the roasted maple add more stability from standard maple? I'm gassing for a full roasted maple Stingray.
I think that’s kind of the whole point with roasted maple. By removing moisture you increase stability over time. I don’t think there’s any way to judge that other than over the years.
Won’t be able to give a definitive answer for a year or two, through a couple winter / summer cycles, but others with roasted maple necks have mentioned improved stability with other instruments.
I feel like using the word "Special" for these is a bit of a marketing misstep. This should be THE Stingray now. All the other PR they're doing for this makes it look like this is the new standard, here it is, period. Having "Special" in there makes it sound like they were afraid the updates wouldn't fly and wanted to leave room to backpedal if need be. Ironically I think if they dropped the Special moniker people would have an easier time accepting the changes. I haven't played one yet but I'm sure they're absolutely worthy of being the standard Stingray from now on.
I'm a huge fan of classic 2 band Stingray tone and pretty much everything Classic Stingray offers. But now, I definitely want the new one xD I admit, most of the reasoning is due to the lighter weight, but that's not the entire reason. They also sound to me like they can get the classic tones, the eq seems more usable. The pole pieces align with the strings better, and they're not staggered (massive difference in playing comfort). All other upgrades are the icing on the cake.
