However, I had some SS Elixir 105-45 on my 4H Special and did not like them at all. They had too much boom and sizzle and lacked what I perceive to be a fullness or evenness of tone.

I actually put some new Super Slinkys back on my special and think that they are the best match for the Stingray, go figure. The tone and feel of them on the SR might be enough for me to just bite the bullet and change strings more often.

I have found the Elixir nickels to have a fuller tone. Haven't perceived boomy in the past or on my 30th SR5 with the stainless, but they certainly have a different sound and are not as full as the nickels.

I thought about running Slinkys after playing them when my last couple of new basses arrived. I liked the tone, but I'm stuck on the feel of the Elixirs. And, like you, I kill normal strings very quickly and would have to change strings quite often.

Couldn’t help it. Had to get the Markbass too. Sounds so good together. A huge sound from a tiny amp.

@StrangerDanger, What are those large buttons added onto your pedal switches called?
I'd love to get some for my own board as it'd make the switches so much easier to hit when playing live. :)

All, any idea as to how to get this sound? This is the Stingray sound I hear in my head and would love to get eq and setup recommendations as to how to obtain it! Do I need to raise my pickup height to practically touch the strings? Is this all tube amp? Thanks in advance. I have a Bergantino Forte and HDN112. Intro to the video is long. Bass comes through pretty well at 2:00 mark.

With the TI flats the sound is VERY dry and "crispydry" and with these year-old TIs there is no zing or metally clank, or string noise. So, probably great in a mix but not ideal slap or bedroom tone. Still very long sustain on the notes but that is probably due to solid bass construction and general string quality, who knows.

Sorry, I worded that very poorly. Watch NFL while typing, heh. I meant the pots. Was thinking about the dropped 4HH that I saw and thinking that it would be a fun relic project, but if the pots are connected to a PC board, then I'm not going to be able to easily replace that. Two of the shafts control pot shafts are bent.

So I recorded some tracks today for a guy. It was some whiny 90s grunge stuff. Shine down esque mess. Nothing I like but I wanted to help and was genuinely curious what the SRS HH would do. Using the middle setting with fingers and compression I was able to get a very respectable tone that sounded perfect. I much prefer snappy syncopated space funk and this bass can do that in spades but damn if it didn’t do a great job on the other stuff too.
