i have to say i am finding this thread really amusing... cheers 
i have no experience of ebony adjusters at all... but i can say that i had the aluminum ones fitted with no other work on my bass done at the same time or since, and they made an amazing difference to the playability and the sound quality... but they made the bass quieter acoustically... but i imagine that this is because the soundpost had been moved a little.
i guess this leaves you no farther forward at all... but there you go.
i looked at the study, and would agree that there is little point in throwing the baby out with the bath water... there are the beginnings of a comparrison and its a start... not a brilliant one... but a start. :scowl:
and before you ask... i do know about research methods and methodologies... so i know how to inperpret the value of evidence... but i will admit that in terms of study methodology... 'science' has never been very good at representing the quirkiness of an individual, and basses are individuals i'm afraid... soz but its an entirely qualitative thing for me.
but isn't that what makes a bass great..?
too many variables floating round i guess... science is never going to capture all of them... back to car tyres then...
