Double Bass Ebony

I have a question that doesn't really matter a ton. I'm just curious. Since fingerboards are so long and take so much ebony is it common to have areas of higher and lower quality wood on the same piece. I'm just looking at my bass and tirades the nut the wood is pure black and in thumb position there is more brown.

Just changes in the wood. It wouldnt work to well to use more than one piece with a fingerboard. Natural discolourations and sometimes people use dye to make it look more uniform, over time it wears off where you play the most.
