Double Bass Eddie Gomez

I freaking love Eddie Gomez. I think it's common for people in my generation (er... the "younger", let's say under-35 generation...) to sleep on Eddie a bit, as he seems to be less talked about (amongst my peers) than other bassists. Anyways, again...

I freaking love Eddie Gomez! His melodic sense is superb and he knew how to get around the instrument. For anyone who needs further proof, I show them this one-chorus solo over My Romance. Oof. What I would give to be able to express so much in such a short statement...!

Almost forty years on, this entire recording keeps teaching me.

I was so lucky to see them play this material live at Symphony Hall in Boston, 1981. That was the first set. The second set they backed Dizzy Gillespie.

Have you seen this reprise performance? I think there have been many, but of sadly there will be no more. Per the video notes, Steve Gadd is playing oboe on this one. What a thrill it must have been to share a stage with Mike Brecker!

One of my first Eddie G./Bill E. recordings.

Then there's this, the first I had ever heard of Gomez, played mostly on a Garrard turntable at the time ('72) with a tonearm like a backhoe.

I grew up with both of these records as my father played them in the house — also on a Garrard turntable! And I eventually inherited them.
