EDM on bass?

The guitarist wants to get into playing electronic dance music, but using guitar & bass instead of laptops and synths.

I don't know much about this genre or even if this can be done successfully?
Any ideas what to play? general chord progressions for this type of music?

I thought the idea was that the E in edm stands for electronic..

Is your bass not electronic? Playing EDM live is not new. Check out a group called battles or a bonobo live band set. Chord progression can be anything. There is a ton of one chord stuff with lots of texturing involved but do not pigeonhole yourself. The one thing I will say is that if you have no experience with the music, go do some research and listen. IMO the Europeans have a bit better knowledge on what's actually good than the Americans.

Gearwise, I would suggest a 5 string or a 4 strung BEAD. You're probly going to need at least a sustain pedal but overdrive, envelope filters and octavers wouldn't hurt either. EDM has some Killin basslines, have fun!

Why not have your guitarist make you a playlist, and then transcribe the exact bass lines and specific chord progressions for those songs?

Bass is a role, not an instrument. Bass lines can be performed on electric bass guitar, upright bass, keyboard, organ pedals, tuba, human voice....

cheers for the replies guys watching that vid it seems a very minimalist style.

I think the guitarists doesn't actually have any playlist as such, just ideas of what he wants? at our last jam we tried to do something and three other guys from the other studio came in to listen, which never has happened before.
But really we were just noodling and making stuff up on the fly.

Jojo Mayer puts on an interesting set, and this bass player fills a helluva part of the soundstage. In this context, EDM just seems like spacey jam with counterpoint rhythms. And they're on Spotify for a good commute home.
