I play this style and I can tell you my carved bass sounds better than a Kay. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Louis Vola and Emmanuel Sodieux didn't play plywood basses.

Of course, that was later in the game and after the breakup of the Quintette du Hot Club de France of which one of my all-time favorite musicians was a member (hint: not Django). I believe the "elite crowd" to which you refer were Nazis and "incarcerated" seems far too benign a term. I prefer Porajmos.

I have a choice between a K61 Johannes Kohr and a ES-9 Englehardt. Both have adj. bridges, paded bags, & Pist. Obl. strings. Both have a great setup, play great, & are in great shape. What would you do?

I'd keep looking, there are great deals around on better instruments than these .....but if you can't....

The best answer is, of course, play 'em both, and get the one that inspires you the most. Cheers

Here's a good example of how horrible Engelhardt basses (like mine) sound recorded acoustically in a band setting:



That bass has weedwacker strings on it, by the way. It would sound much treblier and better with really bright whiny strings and a carved top, don't you think?

I'm sorta new here, but wouldn't that sound better if you were stading on the correct side of the bass?
