eek...feedback

Hey everyone.
I played my first gig with my new markbass Mini CMD 121P last night.
The sound engineer said there wasn't enough XLR inputs on the desk so used what looked like an unbalanced XLR to jack cable to connect the D.I on the amp to the desk.
we sound checked and everything was grand but when the bassist from the other band plugged in there was a horrible high-pitched feedback which seemed to come from the stage monitors and FOH but not the amp's speaker.
I'm a little freaked and wonder if anyone else has encountered this kind of thing?
I kinda hope it is something to do with the connection from the amp to the desk and not the amp itself.
Any help would be really appreciated

Must have been his bass that caused it, no?

Something to do with active/passive electronics or some such?

Just my gut reaction. Probably wrong

I'm not sure, i was using my fender MIM active jazz and he was using a ibanez soundgear six string...which i think is active too?

Sounds like a problem at the desk end if it didnt come through the amp.

for some reason it only happened when he faced the amp and was quite close to it...which makes me think it might have had something to do with the amp itself.

If it was the amp itself there would have been feedback coming through the amplifier.

Possibly there was and you didnt notice? That would explain what was happening

That's pretty normal I thought, my guitard mates used to do that all the time to get more feedback...
