Effects Loop Yea or Nay?

Just a general question about effects, as I have been using a Big Muff Pi and will be receiving my Zoom B2.1u this week sometime - what are the pros/cons of going direct my bass into the effects and out to my amp, as opposed to going from bass to amp and from the amp's effects loop into the effects?

What exactly are the differences and how does each path affect the tone? I assume if I wanted to I could have some effects go direct and then others through the effects loop at the sime time? (i.e. go direct into the Zoom, then into the amp and have the big muff through the effects loop after the fact?)

i was thinking about this myself today and your link cleared up a few things.

Very interesting.. and all this time I've been using my F/X loop.. I'll have to try direct next time and see what changes.. thanks!
