Alright, I know everyone is tired of these threads, but the fact is I don't trust the other places on the net because they seem to be geared towards guitar players and I know I will get better answers from the guys here.

Basically, I got an Aguilar TLC today, which I want to use after my BEF and other pedals to tame them a bit. So here's what I got, how would you arrange them?

Boss TU2
EBS MultiDrive
105Q wah
Source Audio BEF
Ibanez flanger
Aguilar TLC ( compressor)
Boss CE5 chorus
Rocktek delay

Again, sorry for the thread and I appreciate your responses.

A word of advice on the 105q. A while ago someone posted a video of Bryan Beller from Dethklok and a few other projects about his pedalboard and set up. He has his 105q at the very end of his signal chain, as he found he gets a lot better results with it there. I tried hooking it up at the end of my chain now, since I was unhappy with how much wah I could get. I found it works a lot better after everything. Way more dynamic response and a much fuller wah sound. I found before my dirt section, the wah was very subtle and kind of drowned out. Now, I love it and the sound it gives me.

I think the main thing with the wah placement is being before or after your dirt (multidrive in your case). So I'd try the wah in both positions and see what you like better.

I like my fuzz/distos going into my filters for synthy globulousness (with octaver at the very beginning and well I have a distortion after one filter and before another but more for a clean boost/OD).

It's a compromise with fuzz-->filter-->compression but you can always turn the comp off (I like my fuzzes to breath but am open to the idea of using compression to try to achieve a more fuzz-->toob amp sound).

If synthy sounds aren't your aim then I would go with Chris-K's suggestion

So what do you think of this?

TU2>Drive>BEF>TLC>Flanger>delay>chorus>wah

I wonder though, if I am using the compressor to tame spikes shouldn't it be after everything else?

That's how I run mine, with my Multicomp at the very end of my chain. But it really depends on what pedals are actually causing the spikes. I put my multicomp there at first because thats how everything would fit on my board, but I found that I like the sound I get with it there, so it worked out for me. The key is experimenting and figuring out how you want the pedals to interact with each other.

If I had your pedals, I'd probably start with the chain Chrisk-K suggested, but with the wah towards the end. Then I'd mess with things from there.

*Edit* http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/did-anyone-ever-post-bryan-beller-intro-pedalboards-732472/ is the video I was talking about. I found it very useful in helping me understand chain order. Gets you to think about how the pedals interact with each other and thoughts on designing your sound.

The general rule is filter effects > distortion > compressor ...

I would disagree with all of that. I prefer filters towards the end of the chain so they have something more interesting to filter. I also usually prefer distortion after a compressor rather than compressed distortion.

Ideally with filters - if they are envelope-following - you'd want them to get the amplitude envelope direct from your bass but potentially filter the sounds that you get from your effects, which is why there are various filter pedals with their own effects loops or key in jacks to solve that problem.

Putting the wah at the end of the chain did just what you said it would. Thank you very, very much, :hyper:
