Effects volume

Start with the dry sound and mix in the effect, you probably need less effect mixed in than you would think.
Once the sound level starts increasing too much, reduce a bit of the master level, or reduce both dry and effect sound.

It will be a never ending war to match effect levels, as room variations can change the percieved effect mix too.
