thought i would ask your favorite cant do without effect. Tried so many over the years and i gotta tell you...never found one that i could not live without. Just play straight through my amp but wondering if i am missing something...

If you listen to isolated Jamerson recordings, he's got a pretty overdriven tone going on. Most of the amps during those days weren't capable of having the headroom or the wattage to stay clean at stage levels.Thanks for the feedback all. Totally depends on the song / genre.
Sometimes extra effects really don't help, in which case not using them is the right thing to do.
Sometimes the song would benefit from a bit of something or other, but you can get by without if you can't be bothered to work on that side of things.
Other times a song really does need a sound that the bass can't do on its own, so you're not really doing your job if you don't have an appropriate effect.
And finally, there are things that bass guitar + effects can't do, and you need to roll in some synth or something.
