Double Bass ehrlund contact pu-mike

Hi,

it seems to me that there must be still something wrong with the manes of the file.

i just listened to all the files in my studio again through good monitors.
The FC clip has an amount of room and air that is impossible to be captured by the FC. I own also a FC.....
Of course, i could be wrong though....
You might want to check that to avoid confusion.
Beautiful playing btw!

Regards,
paul

I agree the FC sounds a little TOO good.

When I put my Fostex headphones on an listen to the different clips I like the DPA 4099 clips the best (better detail and not as bottom heavy). I've heard Full Circles sound that good on several basses, unfortunately I have wooden adjusters and that prevents me from using a Fishman . The Ehrlund doesn't sound anything like that on my bass, but it's entirely possible that's how it sounds into a computer.

Can anyone suggest how to order an Ehrlund from Jonas. I have sent him two emails (the method of ordering mentioned on his website) and gotten no response. Or, does anyone else offer the Erhlund with his short cable mod?

I know that the pickup and Pre amp are available stateside from Gollihur Music. Whether or not he can modify the cable for you I don't know, but they are great to deal with, just drop them an email. Jonas is sometimes out at various music shows in europe like the Musikmesse showing his wares. He's always responded to my emails very promptly though.

Thanks Ric! I have used Gollihur before and have always had a great experience and would prefer to order from them. However, I really don't like the thought of that long cable. Do you have the longer cable version and been able to make it work?

I have a the long cable on my Erhlund and I simply wrapped up the excess wire in a circle and velcro'ed it. The cable doesn't touch anything except the velcro pieces so the cable is kind of suspended in the air and the excess velcro attaches to the tailpiece. No problems.

I'm still enjoying the way the Erhlund and the Full Circle blend together with a Headway preamp. They seem to compliment each other well on my bass. Here's a live clip of what I do with this set up: YouTube - ‪"Lover, Don't You Want Me Now"‬‏

Here's a clip of the Erhlund combined with an Underwood pickup. Don't mind the Biesele magnetic pickup. It was not used here. The arco section is mostly the Erhlund and then I bring back up the Underwood in the louder sections:

Clink,
Now I'll admit that I'm what you might call an Ehrlund affectionado, but on my bass and through my amps the Ehrlund is much clearer in the mix and better defined than the Realist. I know that's not comparing it to the Full Circle, which has a better defined sound than the Realist and can get louder. Henson bass uses both pickups I believe, maybe we can get him to weigh in. IMHO if you throw out the volume differences then the Ehrlund through an amp or FOH, sounds far more natural than the Realist, or the Full Circle. None of the clips I've heard of the Ehrlund thus far, sound the way it does live.

Ric

I agree that the Ehrlund through an amp or FOH, sounds far more natural than the Realist, or the Full Circle. On my bass I feel it needs some 'punch' with the Full-Circle. My five string hybrid bass is not a grade- A tone bass IMO. It's getting better though. I also play in more rock oriented situations which require more drastic amplification.

I could use just an Ehrlund with my Prescott or my czech bass in softer situations and it would be fine.

Enged,
I didn't want to shorten the cable until I had identified the sweet spot on my instrument. Then, yes I did have it shortened.
You're absolutely right about a shorter cable, in fact the shorter the better because you don't want it to make contact with any vibrating surfaces (tailpiece, top, bridge, etc.) since it's microphonic. Hensonbass' solution is the simplest, I had a local guitar tech put a 1/4" Female Switchcraft jack and it's mounted into my old Realist plastic pipe clamp thingy.

So it's not too much of a big deal to have it shortened later? That is good to know. I was a little worried that if you got a preshortened cable, it might not reach to the where the sweet spot on the top is. Thanks. I think will just go ahead and order from Gollihur then and have it shortened later after I find the sweet spot. Although I do like Jonas little clippy thing that goes on the tailpeice. I am sure Bob will have a similar solution.

Here is a question for you current Erhlund users, and guys with alot more amplified upright experience than me. Here is what I am looking for in a pickup:
1. one that is not permanently part of the bass so I don't get made fun of when I do orchestral gigs. Or that could be transferred easily to other basses.
2. One that bows well, as arco is a major strength of my playing.
3. one that is more feedback resistant than the rest
4. One that produces a more natural tone than most piezos

With all the above in mind, would you recommend the Erhlund or something else? It seems like the Erhlund would do it for all the above better than most. Thx!

That is what I have always thought, but I have read a review or two of the Ehrlund that indicated it was LESS feedback prone that then FC. That was on a Kay though, and maybe that had something to do with it.

engedi1,

I don't own a Full Circle but I have played on basses that had it installed. Here's my take.

1. It's convienent
2. It can get very loud, definitely louder than a Realist
3. It has a distinctive tone that cuts or blends in a live mix
4. You can definitely use a bow with it, depending on the
type of strings you have on your instrument.

I own an Ehrlund and on my bass with Spirocore Weich
Strings

1. It sounds more like my bass than the Realist, Revolution Solo, or Underwood.
2. It's sound blends into the mix in a live setting, it does not have a distinctive tone color like the Full Circle, it sounds like my bass does without a pickup
3. It will not get as loud as a Full Circle can.
4. Using a bow and soloing fast passages pizzicato are liberating, because there it's more like playing into a good mic.

Thanks Ric! Great advice. One can't have everything, and for me the FC is out because I don't want a pickup that is part of the bass and is inconvenient to remove. I have a K&K bass max that I could always use for extra loud gigs where one needs that piezo low end punch. The Ehrlund seems to be what the doctor ordered for most of my goals...Almost mic-like sound without the bleed or feedback issues of a mic... I hope to order one soon.

I just ordered the Ehrlund, based on these reviews. Ever since I switched to Animas, I have loved the sound of my bass acoustically, but they haven't been working well with my Realist. (I have a full-carved Grunert) Full Circle isn't an option since it won't fit my Kolstien bridge so I hope this contact mic is the answer.

BJ,
For the most part the Ehrlund is simple to install, but you have to be willing to play around with the placement of the pickup. Make sure that the pickup cable is not touching any vibrating surfaces, expecially the top of the instrument, because it's very microphonic. From the threads here, we also know the Ehrlund and a Phil Jones Superflight Case may not be a good combination. Since your profile doesn't list any amplifiers (not necessarily a bad thing) I wanted to make sure that you knew about this.

Ric

After much thought and review I am going with an Ehrlund myself as well. I imagine doing a lot of lower volume and arco gigs where this will be perfect. Also, after hearing the clips in this thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f4/realist-vs-full-circle-audio-sample-781401/ I have NO interest in a Realist or Full Circle. These direct clips just sound awful to me. I am sure they both sound better through an amp, but I already have a bassmax if I want that piezo tone. there is a clip somewhere on this thread of a jazz duet where the bass was recorded direct to the board through an Ehrlund and that direct tone is AMAZING (can't find the clips again though, a French jazz, bass & guitar, type of thing) Now the waiting...

Thanks Ric. I use the GK MB150. I am always surprised how bad this amp sounds when your standing next to it and how wonderful it sounds 5 feet away. But thats for another thread... ;)
