Double Bass ehrlund contact pu-mike

... The thing is, they are selling a normal microphone also, maybe the clip is from that. Also, I'd like to know the price. I asked him and am eagerly waiting for him to reply.

From what I hear, it does NOT sound like the dyn-b. It's considerably cleaner and has a more transparent high-end. The dyn-b can sound a little snotty, or as if it is cut to not be really brilliant.

It's not likely I'll meet Joris anytime soon, but if I will, I'll send him your greetings.

Hi all,

I asked Göran Ehrlund, and yes, those clips are made with his PICKUP and a preamp he builds as well. I'll link them here for those dropping in on the thread later.

Clip 1
Clip 2

And while yes, it must be checked how the system operates in a band context, I have to say, that's the best contact mic sound I've yet ever heard, and IMO it's superior to any piezo or electret pu system.

I'll check it out soon, since it's also superior to the dyn-b.

More info on the previous clips (courtesy g. ehrlund):

Recorded on a 1800ish double bass, pickup was mounted close to bass side f-hole (!). Can be used for bowing and sounds the bomb, his preamp highly recommended.

Here's two more he sent me, both of a young swedish cello-metal outfit (!), being 4 cellos and one double-bass (well, the Swedes!), all equipped with his system. Drummer and strings recorded live, Göran says, and I have to say, if the drummer recorded together with them in the same room, I'm quite freaked. Anyways, the system seems to have quite some potential.

Here goes:

All I know is: I want one BAD. At least try it, but probably that's the farewell to the dyn-b. I wish, this could stop one day...

I've been using the Dyn-B for years and I like it a lot, but that clip did sound better--my guess is because the mic is not enclosed, as it is on the Dyn-B. I'm looking at that design and thinking "feedback." I'd be very interested in anyone's experiences with it.

I have an Ehrlund mic and I´m very happy with it!
But it doesn´t work perfekt in all situations. For example: if you are playing in a club and it´s a lot of noice around you, or if you have to stand very close to the amp(you can get feedback).
But it sounds great! Sometimes I use it instead of my AMT (in the PA) and I if I have to play loud I use another contact mic for the amp.
On my bass it sounds best on the backside of the bass.
Another contact mic solution that works very well is using one of the four wilson mics and put it in the bridge feet(bassside).

thanks Kristian for the clip. sounds very good. i can only hear one side of the headphone. Like Matthias, i am impressed with the overall sound, very clear with strong high-mids.

i contacted Göran about the "pickup" and asked what kind of mic it is. he sent me some materials that state it is a "linear mic".

does anyone have information about what a "linear" mic is (as opposed to condenser or dynamic)? what are the mechanics of this type of mic? there is no XLR output from the preamp, just a 1/4 inch straight jack, so it's a relatively high impedance mic, like a piezo. but so much more clarity and high-mids than a piezo pickup like Realist.

i did some quick searching on Google and found this page:
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5778083.html

if this is what the Ehrlund is, then i suppose "linear" describes the aspect that it is a flat membrane facing downwards, parallel to the body of the instrument.

interesting, the preamp has a phase reversal knob for fighting feedback. that is something that i've only heard of in the context of piezo pickups so far.

Bill,

it's on the dyn-b pickup as well, a little dial to switch phase. You can find it on ARCO amps as well, and on EAs doubler it's the same, though advanced (I don't know how that works, it's a phase dial). It's not about the pickup type, although I think that feedback-prone systems like microphones get the most benefit of it. What it does is it changes the polarity of the signal, so that the wave is, elementary speaking, "reversed". Thus, if your standing position happens to be in the area of a wave-peak (the strongest amplitude), that causes the feedback. Reversing the wave will cause you to be in an area of lowest amplitude, and the feedback is tamed. The same is true for other unwanted resonances that don't feedback but cause muddy sound or strange timbres. I found it to be very effective when coping with some boomy room situations.

Oh, and this is the actual link to Göran's patent. Triangular and all.

If I'm not mistaken, wilsons are piezos. I've seen some people do that with one wilson in the bridge-foot, and while it's more woody than the original wilson, it's still miles away from microphone solutions...

That said, your clip sounds cool, and brings the same qualities obvious in the others- clear, airy sound more like a room mic than like a pickup. Very cool. But there's, at least I'm hearing them, resonances in the low mids, they boom out a little. Are you sure about the placement on the back of the bass? Have you tried an area closer to the bridge, between the feet an a little south (schertler's recommendation)? Ah, sorry, you dig it, all cool. I'm not here to judge your taste.

That's btw great about the Ehrlund, it seems to be more flexible in terms of cable-length, so you can try all sorts of weird positions, while the schertler's relatively short wire keeps the pickup close to the bridge, at least if you mount the jack on the afterlength.

I just cut some low-mid on my amp and those resonances are no longer a problem! You get problems with different freqences booming out depending on where you put the mic but on my bass I get the most even sound on the backside. If you put the mic on the front side you also have a problem with the cable touching the bass( the cable is very sensitive and makes distorted sounds if it touches anything).

The wilson doesnt´t sound very good but it´s a good complement if you need too play loud and if you put it in the bridge foot I think it sounds better than any piezo I have tried!
I havn´t seen anyone writing about it here on this forum, thats why I brought it up.
But soundwise it cannot be compared to the ehrlund or ordinary microphones.
