EHX Lizard King Bass Fuzz

It should be available in july, I cannot wait either :hyper:

Nate Navarro demoed it already:

I played pedals for years and year and years, and I looking back my 3 favorite dirt pedals were the DAM Ezekiel, Wounded Paw Attack Goat and the Spaceman Nebula. The latter 2 both had upper octaves without gates, and were EXCELLENT with a solo’d analog octave. I’m hoping the Lizard King is similar!

Got mine today. I like it! Here's my first impressions:

- Bass response/bass retention is excellent, as you might imagine.
- This is a very high gain pedal. It sounds more Muff-like than Fuzz Face/Octavia. I believe it's based on the Bazz Fuzz circuit, which I didn't think was so high gain. As such, it excels at the things you love about a Big Muff: huge sounding chords, eternal sustain.
- I find it to be an extremely bright sounding pedal. With the Tone all the way up it is quite piercing. I find I am really liking the Tone knob to be around 10 o'clock so far (again, first impressions).
- The Sun setting changes the clean sound by pumping the bass and treble (effectively scooping mids) and this makes it sit very nicely blended. The Shadow setting uses an unaffected clean sound, and I find myself using less blend to "sit it" in the mix.
- The Sun and Shadow setting also change some of the tone structure of the fuzz and it's not just brighter/darker. The Shadow fuzz side is a little more squared off and fuzzy and the Sun setting sounds more squishy and distortion-y.
- I find the Octave to be very strange. I never played the Lizard Queen so I don't know if it's the same. It's quite weak unless the knob is turned way up and you're playing with a lighter touch (or turn your bass volume down). Even solo-ing the neck pickup and rolling the tone off doesn't really make it "pop" like your classic Octavia-style fuzz. It does add a lot of texture and character and I like having it higher than I thought I would. Here too the Sun and Shadow setting change the tonality of the octave with the Shadow octave being more cutting and a little splatty.
- Using a voltage reducer got a lot more flexibility out of the pedal, but it was very subtle. You get a little low more low-end with a saggier battery, I think because of the EQ on the blend knob in Sun mode.

I'll play with it in the Doom/Stoner band and see how it goes but I think it's a winner. I think it would be incredible on a downtuned guitar given how bright it is. If modders are interested, I think there's a big opportunity to add a second cap as a switchable option to add a lower gain setting. A bit lower gain I think would make it a little more fuzz and little less distortion.

Thanks for the good review!
The only thing I didn’t like was the all out gain on the videos. I always have my bass volume on full and hate pedals that need me to change it to react differently. It’s why I didn’t gel with the darkglass duality fuzz. Also interesting to hear the octave not pop so much.
I just bought a cmc tall font green muff and thinking (trying to justify it haha) got a slightly better deal on what I wanted.
I guess being so cheap may not hurt to try both!

I have one, tried it out today. I like it a lot on first impression, but love it with a bit of low octave running into it. It gets really sludgy and aggressive sounding.

I still need a lot more time with it, then I’ll probably end up not liking it like with me and most dirt pedals. :)

As @n!k said, I do find it to be very bright sounding on its own. It’s not gated that I experienced unless there’s something internal I don’t have tweaked.

Sounds amazing in the video, but I can’t play like Nate. I need some videos from mediocre bass players to make up my mind.
Hold my beer :D

Seriously though…I can only find one demo on YouTube for the Lizard King on bass, and it’s the Nate Navarro one. That is absolutely wild.

I’m probably going to have to get one just to make my own mind up as to whether I want to get one.

Late to the party, got one last year, but couldn't find a good purpose for it.
Until tonight, tried it out on my board, switching/trying different pedal combinations.
I have it after a Darkglass Alpha Omicron-clone, and a Boss OC5.
It's a nice fuzz, beit in Sun or Shadow mode. In combination with the AO, Shadow mode works best, Sun's bass/treble boost sounds a bit too boomy with the AO boosting.
The OC5 gives the frequency modulation of the Lizard King an extra kick as well.
I'm still on the fence, leave the Lizard King on, or put back the Dronechov Black Philip (basically an Acapulco Gold with gain, volume, Muff-tone circuit and blend option).
I'll decide tomorrow, I guess.
